Magnesium AZ31B
AZ31B magnesium alloy is a silver, odorless Mg-Al series alloy. It is 35% lighter than aluminum and has a specific gravity that is 1/4.5 that of iron. This alloy boasts excellent mechanical properties, casting performance, and corrosion resistance, making it currently the most widely used alloy grade. Its main composition by weight is Mg:Al:Zn at 96:3:1. This alloy is easy to process and can achieve high-strength welds using metallic arc and gas tungsten arc welding processes.

AZ31B is a magnesium alloy primarily composed of magnesium, aluminum, and zinc. Each alloying element plays a specific role in enhancing its properties. Approximately 3% aluminum is included to enhance room temperature strength, while 1% zinc is added to restrict hot shortness during hot working.

For AZ31B magnesium alloy, there are currently four tempers available, depending on customer requirements. These different tempers result in varying properties
AZ31B-F (As-fabricated): This is the material’s “as-produced” state, without any specific heat treatment or cold working to alter its properties.
AZ31B-O (Annealed): This temper means the material has been fully annealed and recrystallized
AZ31B-H24 (Strain hardened and partially annealed): This temper has been both cold worked (strain hardened) and partially annealed.
AZ31B-H26 (Fully strain hardened and partially annealed): This temper undergoes more intensive cold working than H24, followed by a partial anneal.
